The Healthy Living Hub (HLH) project is an idea created by members of the Friends of Northampton Racecourse and is being supported by the Chronicle & Echo's Racecourse Reborn campaign.
And the project is now being spearheaded by The Racecourse Board, prompted by the Chron's initial Reclaim the Racecourse campaign, which brings together Northampton Borough Council, Northamptonshire Police, health agencies, The River Nene Regional Park project and the Friends of Northampton Racecourse (FONR).
Steve Summers, one of the members of the steering group which is spearheading the HLH project, said: "The Racecourse is a wonderful expanse of green space providing pleasure and recreation for approximately half a million users each year, but it has the potential for much greater and creative use, particularly to improve the health of local people."
At the heart of the HLH plan is a community cafe, which would provide healthy food, include a performance area, an information shop, offering guidance on local health and community agencies, and space for local groups to use for activities.
The building is also likely to include novel eco-friendly features, including alternative energy sources and rainwater harvesting for use in the toilets.
